Main assets

The main RheinPorts assets are:

  • its multimodal platform based in the southern Upper Rhine.
  • its location right in the centre of the north-south corridors.
  • its direct multimodal connections with the great North Sea ports and also, via the alps, with the Mediterranean region.
  • its situation right next to the city of Basel, in the Three-Border region with its 2.3 million inhabitants. The Basel-Mulhouse-Weil ports are located within a very short distance of major production facilities, which include pharmaceutical, chemical and biological science clusters, as well as car assembly plants and top ranking mechanical engineering companies.
  • its modern and multimodal facilities.

The RheinPorts assets are finally those of the three river ports of Basel, Mulhouse and Weil am Rhein.

Port of Switzerland: Trimodality, major advantage

Trimodality is part and parcel of the facilities offered by Port of Switzerland. About 70% of river-borne goods are transhipped to be taken on the railway network, through the ports’ two leading-edge, electrified railway terminals, able to accommodate trains of up to 650 metres length. Three parallel railway lines run along the wharves to support transhipment, while the port railway system, which belongs to Port of Switzerland, can be used by any certified rail transport operator. HGV trucks have easy access to the French, German and Swiss highway networks from the port area.

Outside the port: the multimodal platforms

Rheinhafengesellschaft Weil am Rhein is involved in three major activities along the Rhine, split into three zones: the southern part of the port includes warehouses and other external storage areas as well as bulk storage facilities; while the northern part handles transhipment of bulk goods and has a container terminal for transhipping goods between boats. These activities take up a total surface area of some 131,000 m², with 90,300 m² in current use and 40,700 m² available for development. Rheinhafengesellschaft Weil am Rhein also has a port railway network with a total length of 4.6 km.

Port facilities include 6 cranes, a quay wall, a container terminal for 2,100 TEU containers and a separate zone for transhipping hazardous substances. There are direct connections to both the German and Swiss railway networks through the RAILION and SBB Cargo rail carriers. Rheinhafengesellschaft Weil am Rhein also offers fast link-up to the German (A5), Swiss (N2) and Fench (A35) highway networks.
